The Client Brief: The Midway Diner in Barrie needed some interior signs to let their customers know they would be closed for an entire week in January.
Since the diner is usually open 363 days a year, their extended closure is atypical. As a result, they wanted to attract the attention of their customers with a bold, colourful sign. Inside, the mood is reminiscent of a ‘50s diner with a distinctive red, blue and yellow colour scheme, and a classically style checkboard floor and tile accents. The signs provided needed to fit in with the established atmosphere and visual scheme.
To add some character, I wanted to include the diner’s logo. However, the only version available was for web and on their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/MidwayDiner/ and it would not work well in print, so I decided to recreate it in Illustrator.
Made up of three parts, the type was the most challenging. The word DINER appeared to be an existing font but I couldn’t match it exactly so I started with Unica and modified the each letter as needed. The MIDWAY however, looked to be hand-drawn and replicated the original exterior signage from 1962 – the only option was to re-draw it by hand in Illustrator.
Skills Used: hand drawn and modified typography, logo recreation and layout designs in Illustrator CC.
